What CloudFront is
Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network (CDN). It caches content at edge locations — a global network of sites close to users — so that content is served from nearby instead of travelling all the way from a single Region. The benefit is lower latency: content loads faster because it has less distance to travel. Whenever a question describes a worldwide audience and slow loads from one location, CloudFront is the fix.
How it works, in three words
Origin — the source of the content, usually an S3 bucket or a web server. This is where the real content lives.
Edge location — where CloudFront caches a copy, close to users.
Cache miss — the first time content is requested at an edge location, CloudFront fetches it from the origin, caches it, and serves it. Later requests are then served straight from the cache.
That flow — request hits the nearest edge, edge serves the cache or fills it from the origin — is the whole mental model, and it answers most CloudFront questions.
The distinction to lock in: edge locations are not Availability Zones
The trap the exam plants is confusing edge locations with Availability Zones. They are different networks for different jobs:
Availability Zones are where you run and store workloads inside a Region.
Edge locations are a separate, larger network used only to cache and deliver content near users.
Delivery is the edge; compute and storage are Regions and zones. If a question offers an edge location as a place to run instances or host a database, it is a distractor.
How to use the questions below
Answer each one before opening the explanation, then read past the correct letter to why the other three fail. The distractors are always another service offered where a CDN belongs, or an edge location cast in the role of an Availability Zone. Recognising “global delivery, low latency” as CloudFront is the reflex the exam rewards, and the reasoning below builds it.

A company serves static images and files to a worldwide audience from a single Region, and users far away report slow loads. What is the most direct improvement?
Answer: A — Put Amazon CloudFront in front of the content to cache it at edge locations
CloudFront caches the content at edge locations near users worldwide, so distant users get it from a nearby site instead of the single Region — directly addressing the latency. Why not the others: a cheaper Region does not fix distance. A larger instance does not shorten the network path. DynamoDB is a database, not a delivery mechanism for static files. Global delivery points to CloudFront.

When a user requests content that is not yet cached at the nearest edge location, what does CloudFront do?

On a cache miss, CloudFront retrieves the content from the origin, stores it at the edge, and delivers it; subsequent requests for the same content are then served quickly from that cache. Why not the others: it does not error out or require manual uploads to the edge, it does not pick a random Region, and it does not stop caching — the first request simply populates the cache.
