The SAA-C03 is as much a reading exam as an architecture exam — long scenarios, plausible options, and a clock. Most of what unsettles candidates on the day is not AWS knowledge; it is the format. Here it is, in plain English.
The facts, in one place
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) is 65 questions in 130 minutes. It costs $150 USD. You pass with 720 on a scale of 100 to 1000, and the certification is valid for three years. You book it at Pearson VUE and sit it at a test centre or online with a proctor.
Questions come in two shapes: multiple choice, with one correct answer out of four, and multiple response, where the question tells you to select TWO or more correct answers. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and multiple-response questions are all-or-nothing — partial credit does not exist. Both facts shape how you sit the exam. The diagram above puts the numbers side by side.
Fifteen of your 65 questions do not count. AWS mixes in unscored trial questions it is evaluating for future exams. They are not marked, not grouped, and impossible to identify, so the only sane response is to treat all 65 as scored. An oddly-worded scenario you cannot place may simply be one AWS is still testing — do not let it rattle you.
720 is not 72%. Your result is a scaled score from 100 to 1000. Scaling keeps slightly harder and slightly easier versions of the exam equally fair, so the raw number of correct answers behind a 720 varies from form to form. “About 72%” is a mental approximation and nothing more — there is no per-question pass mark to calculate against. Practise to be comfortably above the line, not to land on it.
There is no per-domain pass. You cannot fail by being weak in one domain, as long as your total clears 720. In your final week, pulling a weak domain from bad to adequate is worth more than polishing a strong one.
What the weights actually tell you
The four domains are weighted 30 / 26 / 24 / 20 across the 50 scored questions. Read that as a study budget rather than a table:
- Design Secure Architectures — 30%, about 15 scored questions. The largest domain: access boundaries, IAM, and how data is protected in transit and at rest.
- Design Resilient Architectures — 26%, about 13 scored questions. What stays up when something fails: Multi-AZ versus multi-Region, decoupling, failover.
- Design High-Performing Architectures — 24%, about 12 scored questions. Matching storage, compute, database and network to the workload — scaling and caching.
- Design Cost-Optimized Architectures — 20%, about 10 scored questions. The same architectures judged by price — the domain where AWS’s answer and the intuitive answer diverge most often.
Secure and Resilient together are 56% of the paper. If your preparation time is short, that is where it goes. But do not underrate Cost-Optimized at 20% — a technically correct architecture that costs three times what it should is a wrong answer here.
Time, and the trap inside it
130 minutes for 65 questions is exactly two minutes per question, and unlike the Cloud Practitioner exam, you will feel it. SAA-C03 stems are scenarios: a company, a workload, a constraint, and four architectures that all look defensible. The trap is not running out of knowledge; it is spending four minutes re-proving an answer you had already found.
Two habits protect you. Read the final sentence of the scenario first — it holds the actual question and usually the deciding constraint, a “MOST cost-effective” or “LEAST operational overhead” that eliminates two options on its own. And on multiple-response questions, commit to the two most defensible answers and move on: with no partial credit, agonising over the second pick has a poor exchange rate. Never leave a question blank — no negative marking means a blank is a guaranteed zero and a reasoned guess is not.
If English is not your first language
AWS grants a 30-minute extension — the “ESL +30” accommodation — for candidates taking the exam in a non-native language, turning 130 minutes into 160. You request it once in your AWS Certification account before you schedule the exam; it is not applied automatically and cannot be added afterwards. It costs nothing and requires no proof of language ability. On an exam this text-heavy, request it before you book anything else.
Knowing when you are ready
There is no honest formula, but there is a reliable signal — and it is not a percentage.
Take full-length practice tests under exam conditions — 65 questions, 130 minutes, no notes — and score comfortably above the pass mark more than once. Then apply the harder test: for every question you got right, can you name the constraint the three losing architectures failed? On the SAA-C03 the wrong options are rarely wrong facts. They are real architectures that fail the scenario — too slow, too fragile, too expensive, too open. Naming why is the skill the exam measures, and the only one that carries over to questions you have not seen.
